Large Late 19th-Century French Painted Wood Library Ladder on Casters

An unusually large late 19th-century French painted wood library ladder, impressive for both its generous scale and architectural presence. Constructed as a freestanding staircase, the ladder rises to approximately seven feet and is fitted with handrails along both sides for support. Shaped, pierced silhouette balusters punctuate the sloping rails, introducing a graceful vernacular decorative element to the otherwise functional construction. The entire structure retains a wonderfully atmospheric pale green painted finish, with areas of rubbing and exposed earlier surfaces that emphasize its age and sculptural character.

Raised on small metal casters for mobility, the ladder was likely intended for use in a substantial private library, institutional interior, shop, or similarly tall fitted space. Its straightforward joinery, shaped flat balusters, broad wooden treads, and painted surface are consistent with French utilitarian and provincial furniture of the late 19th century, rather than the work of a recognizable cabinetmaker or manufacturer; no maker's mark is visible in the supplied photographs.
