French Empire Gilt and Patinated Bronze “Pendule-Veilleuse” Mantel Clock, 19thC

A finely cast 19th-century French Empire-style mantel clock in patinated and gilt bronze, notable for its sculptural presence and refined neoclassical detailing. The circular dial features a distinctive violet opaline glass chapter ring with Roman numerals set within reserves, centered by a delicately engine-turned gilt medallion. The dial is enclosed within a gilt bezel adorned with a continuous foliate garland motif.
Above, a boldly modeled spread-wing eagle—an enduring symbol of imperial power—crowns the composition, while the dial is supported by a fluted and acanthus-cast baluster column. The tripod base terminates in three finely detailed lion’s paw feet in dark patinated bronze, lending both stability and architectural strength to the design. The interplay between matte patina and burnished gilt surfaces enhances the crispness of the casting and the richness of the ornament.
The clock also functions as a pendule-veilleuse, with a candle compartment discreetly fitted behind the dial to illuminate the translucent glass face.
