A charming French Louis XVI-period carved and giltwood mirror, dating to the late 18th century. The rectangular mirror plate is enclosed within a finely molded giltwood frame enriched with delicate beaded ornament and restrained Neoclassical detailing. Particularly distinctive is the sculptural crest, composed of a group of finely carved birds gathered around an arrow and perched atop a fluted architectural pedestal, forming a playful variation on the traditional Louis XVI “Trophy of Love.” Such romantic imagery—particularly doves or birds accompanied by arrows, quivers and other attributes of Cupid—was a favored decorative vocabulary in France during the final decades of the 18th century.

The warm, time-softened gilding displays attractive rubbing and areas of exposed ground consistent with age, lending the frame considerable character. The combination of its simple rectangular proportions, classical moldings and whimsical carved crest is characteristic of the transition toward the refined Neoclassicism of the Louis XVI period.
