Pierre Petit-Gérard (1852–1933), Rustic Courtyard with Cart and Ladder

Pierre Petit-Gérard (French, 1852–1933)
Farmhouse Courtyard with Cart and Ladder
Signed lower right "Petit-Gérard"

Oil on panel.

Depicting a tranquil rural farmhouse courtyard, the composition centers on a weathered wooden ladder leaning against a stone outbuilding, with a rustic handcart resting amid the grass. Stone steps lead the eye toward a sunlit garden beyond, while the carefully rendered architecture and vegetation evoke the quiet charm of the French countryside. Executed in a naturalistic palette and with sensitive attention to light and atmosphere, the work reflects the artist's accomplished handling of landscape and genre subjects.

Signed lower right: *"Petit-Gérard."*

Presented in a molded giltwood frame with black-painted liner.

Pierre Petit-Gérard was born in Strasbourg in 1852 and died in Paris in 1933. Initially known for military and cavalry scenes, he later expanded his practice to include landscapes, rural views, and portraiture. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1880 onward and received several honors during his career. His work is represented in French public collections, including those of Strasbourg. (Musée d'Orsay)
