A striking and sculptural hand-carved wooden wall sconce by French artist C. Balzeau, carved in France in 1980. Executed from a single block of hardwood, the piece takes the form of an outstretched human arm terminating in a finely detailed clenched hand designed to hold a taper candle. The naturalistic modeling of the musculature, wrist, and hand is complemented by a stylized draped cuff at the shoulder, giving the work both a classical and surrealist character. Signed and dated by the artist, the sconce showcases the warmth and expressive grain of the wood, enhanced by a rich natural patina acquired over time. Equally compelling as a functional candleholder or as a sculptural wall-mounted artwork, it reflects the tradition of French artisanal wood carving while offering a bold, whimsical decorative presence. France, 1980. Measures 22.5 inches long.
