A charming French majolica asparagus service comprising twenty-four pieces, including one large handled serving platter and twenty-three individual asparagus plates, all decorated in vibrant naturalistic glazes. The serving platter is modeled with a lifelike bundle of white asparagus spears, while each plate features sculptural relief decoration of asparagus emerging from leafy green foliage. The scalloped borders are embellished with woven basketweave and rope motifs, highlighted in rich turquoise, cream, and ochre glazes that beautifully complement the organic forms.
Asparagus services became fashionable in France during the late 19th century, when asparagus was considered a celebrated seasonal delicacy.
