A Handshake With the Sea: A 19th Century Mounted Santos Arm w/Coral
A striking primitive carved wood sculpture depicting an elongated hand and forearm, rendered with a wonderfully weathered, timeworn surface. The hand is raised in a clenched gesture, with individually carved fingers and a dark, polished inset detail adorning the forearm. A vivid branch of red coral emerges dramatically from the top of the hand, creating an unexpected juxtaposition between the organic coral and aged carved wood.
The sculpture retains traces of original pigment and surface decoration, adding to its character and sense of age. Mounted on a simple iron stand, the piece has a wonderfully sculptural silhouette and an intriguing, almost surreal presence.
