English Majolica Horse-Head and Fish-Handle Figural Pitcher, 19th/20th Century

An exuberant English majolica earthenware pitcher, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, modeled with an extraordinary combination of zoomorphic and foliate ornament. The bulbous body rises to a dramatic horse-head-form spout, complete with modeled bridle and open mouth, while the opposing handle takes the form of a long, curving fish or sea creature. The body is densely decorated in high relief with fantastical chimeras and other animal figures amid fruiting branches, leaves, and scrolling vegetation, creating a richly sculptural surface. Variegated glazes in green, brown, ochre, cream, and touches of blue emphasize the relief and give the piece the lively, naturalistic appearance associated with Victorian majolica.
