A handsome early 19th-century British equestrian oil painting by John Frederick Herring Sr. (British, 1795–1865) depicting a chestnut mare and foal in a tranquil country stable setting. The mare stands prominently in profile beside a rustic outbuilding, her richly modeled chestnut coat and white hind marking illuminated against a dense backdrop of mature trees, while her young foal rests nearby. At left, the landscape opens toward a distant horizon beneath a softly atmospheric sky, creating a pleasing sense of depth and pastoral serenity.
